Problem
The resource development and operational projects are characterised by rising complexity, cost and risk. With over 139,000 environmental legislative instruments in Australia only and up to 20 technical disciplines for any given project the complexity is at an all-time high. This rising complexity is driving increased risks associated with obtaining and maintain both formal and informal project approvals.
The risks also relate to the technical elements of our discipline. We rely upon largely unstructured, decentralised data that is produced at such rate that is it now beyond human capacity to ensure that the relevant information is captured and interpreted for any given project. In addition, environmental trends are not being identified early and social licence is increasing difficult to obtain and maintain.
